The Effectiveness of Beetroot and Apple Juice Combination on Physical Endurance and Hemoglobin Levels in Sprague Dawley Rats

Abstract


Physical performance in humans is closely linked to hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in the blood, making Hb levels a key parameter in evaluating fatigue and stimulant effects. This study aimed to assess the influence of beetroot and apple juice on endurance capacity and hemoglobin levels in white rats (Sprague Dawley). Endurance testing was conducted using a rotarod apparatus, while Hb levels were measured with the Sahli method using a hemometer. A total of 25 rats were randomly assigned into five groups (n = 5 per group): beetroot–apple (1:1) [2.8 g:0.63 g/200 g BW], beetroot–apple (2:1) [5.6 g:0.63 g/200 g BW], beetroot–apple (1:2) [2.8 g:1.26 g/200 g BW], negative control (CMC-Na 0.5%), and positive control (caffeine 20 mg/200 g BW]. Treatments were administered once daily. The observed variables were the duration of endurance on the rotating rotarod stick and Hb levels post-intervention. The findings demonstrated that the combination of beetroot and apple juice significantly enhanced both physical endurance and Hb levels in white rats. Among the treatment groups, the beetroot–apple ratio of 2:1 (5.6 g:0.63 g/200 g BW) yielded the most effective improvement in endurance performance and hemoglobin concentration compared to other tested formulations.
