X`Gender-Sensitive Socio-Ecological Resilience In Sustainable Agriculture: A Systematic Literature Review Of Women’s Participation, Household Welfare, And Food Security
Abstract
The involvement of women in agricultural development is widely acknowledged as a vital factor in improving household income and ensuring food security. This study sought to deliver a systematic and critical synthesis of current scholarship regarding women's involvement in agriculture by delineating theoretical, contextual, and methodological patterns, while also pinpointing significant research gaps. The review utilized the PRISMA procedure to systematically locate and assess 52 peer-reviewed publications published in various geographies, predominantly in developing countries. The studies were analyzed using the TCCM and CIMO frameworks, focusing on theoretical foundations, regional settings, research features, and intervention procedures. The analysis encompassed both quantitative (survey-based regression models) and qualitative (interviews and case studies) techniques, facilitating a thorough assessment of women's agricultural participation. Research indicates that women play a substantial role not just as agricultural workers but also as decision-makers in the distribution of household resources. The Household Bargaining Theory and Gender and Development Theory emerged as the predominant theoretical frameworks, while interventions including access to land, credit, and agricultural training consistently shown beneficial effects on food security and household welfare. The review emphasizes a continual gender disparity in resource access, highlighting the systemic obstacles women encounter despite their vital role in agricultural systems. This study enhances previous assessments by using various analytical frameworks, offering a multifaceted view of gendered agricultural participation. In summary, empowering women in agriculture is both a necessity for gender parity and a strategic approach to sustained rural development. Future study must include longitudinal and comparative studies, intersectional frameworks, and a thorough investigation of policy translation mechanisms to guarantee that women's empowerment results in concrete enhancements in home livelihoods and food system resilience.
